Over the last few weeks, I have been to several children where the parents don't exactly help anyone to look after their children or understand any medical problems themselves. These parents are either ignorant or don't really care for their children, (in my opinion).

I've been to a child with Cerebral Palsy who also had a 'shunt' in place. The mother didn't know whether her child was acting normally or the reason behind having the 'shunt' put in place. Surely if a surgeon is going to operate on your child, you would want to know exactly what they were going to do and the reason for doing it in the first place.

I have also been to children where the parents have left the child with someone else and left no contact details, information about any medical conditions or allergies. What are these people thinking of?

The other type of parent that I have dealt with isn't entirely at fault. These are the ones who don't speak very good English and the so called professionals hadn't helped them fill in all the details in the childs 'Red Book' Things like the parents name, health visitor, allergies or medical conditions.

These bits of basic information can really help ambulance crews treat the child and get them to the correct type of care.
